1896-0423 Davis Sewing Machine Company Letter

Company letterhead from Davis Sewing Machine Company’s Boston location at 159 Tremont Street.

The heading refers to “Sewing Machines and Bicycles” but the central image is of a bicycle and the image on the right of the veiled lady riding a Dayton featured on the back of the 1898 – 1895 Price List of Parts.

George P. Huffman is listed as President, F.T. Huffman as Vice-President and Treasurer, and L.A. Johnson as Secretary. “F.T. Huffman” is “Col. Frank T. Huffman” who would go on to lead the company after George P. Huffman’s death at the of the 1897 on through the company’s eventual liquidation in 1924.

The letter is addressed to the N. N. Hill Brass, Co., a bell maker in Easthampton, Connecticut. The topic is a rather annoyed accounting of a shipping irregularity.

“2 doz. #400” bells were received “which we never ordered.” Furthermore, “you have sent us (1) gross of #235 and 1/2 gross of #024, which is a size we know nothing about.” Returning to the unfortunate matter of the #400 bells, “We do not care for the #400 at all, so please forward the goods we have ordered, and oblige,”.
